Green Tips for the Home by Karissa Stone

With each of our Spotlights I ask that a sister share her talent or knowledge with the rest of the Relief Society. Karissa decided to share a few "green tips" for the home that she has accumulated through work and academic study abroad.

1. Buy an inexpensive water bottle and re-fill it with purified tap water instead of going through multiple water bottles a day that will end up in a landfill

2. Fix leaks...leaks can account for, on average, 10,000 gallons of water wasted in the home every year, which is enough to fill a backyard swimming pool

3. Only run the dishwasher / washing machine when it is completely full to conserve water and energy

4. Turn off all appliances when you're not using them, including lights and computers

5. Add some indoor plants to your home - they will help purify the air and they look great

6. Minimize toxic cleaning products, use green cleaning products when possible to minimize the toxicity of your home

7. Pay all your bills online and put a stop to unsolicited mail to minimize junk mail

8. Repurpose items in your home i.e. using old clothing as rags / dish towels, reusing glass containers for storage in the kitchen, etc

9. Buy local and support local farmers markets

10. Replace at least 5 of your most-used bulbs with compact florescent.

Coming Up: Cooking Activity at Sherry Wallace's

This Wednesday, October 17th, Sherry Wallace will share her talent for cooking by leading a "Meet and Potatoes" demonstration. We all know how great a hearty meal can be, imagine it fresh from your own oven.  If you are already an expert cook, come "meet" some good company and give the first timers a hand! If not, you won't want to miss this scrumptious opportunity.
